Just returned from a few days of pig hunting in Redding, CA. Who says there’s no good big game hunting in the Pac. NW in June? While it’s common knowledge the whitetail deer is the most hunted big game animal in North America, did you know the second most hunted animal in the U.S. is the wild pig?
California is home to a huge and ever-growing pig population, and nonresidents can hunt them year-round. License and tags can be bought over-the-counter. Because the best pig hunting is found on private land, getting access or hiring the services of a guide are the best choices. On this trip we hunted with good friend and guide Parrey Cremeans (www.justforhunting.com), a man we’ve hunted with in the past. There’s a reason we keep coming back.
Zach Waterman, PR Director for Nosler, joined us on this trip. Zach was testing out Nosler’s new M48 .325, a gun we’ll both be using on upcoming bear hunts. I was shooting Nosler’s Custom M48 in a .260 caliber. Both guns were topped with Trijicon scopes, making for the perfect setup in the potentially low-light situation which often comes with pig hunting this time of year.
Finding pigs wasn’t a problem…getting a shot was. Excessive rains led to tall grass, and though we were seeing well over 100 pigs a day, getting a shot at a boar wasn’t a slam-dunk. Toss in the fact we were filming the hunts for an upcoming episode of Trijicon’s Game Chasers, on the Outdoor Channel, and that made getting the ideal shooting situations even more challenging.
On our second morning of the hunt we spotted a group of about 40 pigs which held some nice boars. After a lengthy stalk, Zach finally had his sights on a boar. We couldn’t find the biggest boar of the group, but Zach didn’t care. He made an absolute perfect shot.
Later that afternoon, Parrey and I looked over more than 100 pigs from one spot. The hogs were coming out of the brush to graze on the green grass created by flood irrigation for the working cattle ranch we were hunting one. This time of year, where there’s water in N. California, pigs won’t be far. The temperatures were nearly 100º during the heat of the day. Pigs were tucked tight in the brush, seeking shade, and we found a few wollowing in water. But once the sun went behind the hills and the evening temperatures cooled, pigs were everywhere.
Parrey, myself and my camera man, Travis Ralls, covered over 1/2 mile and soon found ourselves surrounded by pigs in the bottom of a grassy plateau. We were within 15 yards of several hogs but couldn’t see the big boars in the high grass. With daylight running out we headed back up the hill, to gain elevation. Finally we spotted a sounder of boars. Moving into position, the 140 yard shot was simple, and the Nosler Partion did the job, dropping the pig in his tracks.
Zach and I couldn’t have been happier as we headed home with some of the best eating wild game in the country. Stay tuned for a recipe or two…
