I grew up hunting doves and pigeons. Back in the 1970s and early ‘80s, the daily limit on bandtails in Oregon was 7, today it’s only 2. But with favorable nesting conditions the past few springs, this fall marked the most bandtails I’ve seen in over 20 years…which meant the hunting was exceptional.
Over the course of the short, mid-September season, the whole family was able to get out after bandtails at various times. With the hot weather, pigeons stuck around and shooting was good in the foothills of the Cascades and in the Coast Range. We worked feeding areas where birds moved amongst various berry crops and also intercepted 
them as they flew ridgelines heading from the roost to distant feeding grounds. The shooting was fast-paced, but we all got birds, and everyone had a blast.
Oregon’s dove season saw the limits bumped u
p to 15 a day, and a season extending through the end of October. Loads of doves were around the entire season, and still are, and the whole family got in on some great shooting.
Not only was the hunting good, but Tiffany worked her magic in the kitchen, cooking the best dove and pigeon we’ve ever eaten. It never ceases to amaze me, how she keeps coming up with great, new recipes.
Though the hunting and eating were memorable, the highlight of the season for all of us was hunting with Echo, our new Pudelpointer. We got Echo from Steve Waller of www.talltimberpudelpointers.com, and during these hunts, she was 7 months old.
We had a number of people advise that doves and pigeons are not good birds to work with dogs on, for the feathers come out too easily, so the dogs won’t pick them up or retrieve them. The first dove that hit the ground took Echo a few minutes to find, but when she nabbed it she sprinted right back to us, over 40 yards, and delivered it to hand. With the loose feathers picked from her mouth to keep it from drying out, she was ready to go again.
Over the course of the season, Echo retrieved numerous doves and over a dozen bandtails. From tall grass to timber, the edges of clearcuts to powerline right-of-ways, Echo did better than I’d ever thought possible at this age, with these species. Because Echo didn’t see the majority of birds hit the ground, we worked her into position by hand signals, the same hand signals we’ve been teaching her since she was 2 months old. I’d also heard Pudelpointers didn’t respond to hand signals very well, but Echo removed any doubt of that. We look forward to getting her out on some pheasant, quail and duck hunts later this season.
When the days were done, a highlight for the boys was when Echo was so tired, she’d curl up on their beds and sleep the whole night…then wake up the next morning, ready to go. For the first time in my life–since this is the first hunting dog I’ve ever had–I realized that special bond so many of my friends had described over the years. It’s fun having a new hunting partner in the family.
