This trip to Texas found Kazden and I on a father-son adventure.  Kazden would soon be turning 12–seven years had passed since he’d been to TX.  It took some digging, but once good friend Tony Hartelius introduced me to Kyle Hawkins, plans started coming together for some quality free-range hunting (we wanted nothing high-fence).  Kaz’ and I couldn’t have done it without the help of these two men, both of whom I look forward to hunting with more.
Kyle is a life-long Texan, and like many folks, loves to hunt.  Tony guides in multiple western states, and both Kyle and I had spent time in bear, elk and deer camps with him.
The priority was to get Kazden an axis deer, and Kyle had done his homework.  After seeing over 100 axis on day one (no shooter bucks), Kaz’ was pumped.  We also got a giant rattlesnake!  K&SrattlerKill14.5The next day we were back at it, and after a slow morning, Kyle suggested we head to another property.  It’s called the Thompson Ranches, and the property is in place for farming and hunting whitetails and hogs, along with the occasional axis deer.
After a couple hours of sitting, once the shade started whisking across the hills in front of us, things started to happen.  Through the brush, some 350 yards away, we could see legs moving.  Soon, a half-dozen axis does and young cautiously picked their way off the brushy hillside and went to feeding in the river bottom in front of us.
Over the next 30 minutes, dozens more showed up, including some nice bucks.  With a half-hour of shooting light left, we watched more than 80 deer feed off the hillside, cross the rickety four-strand fence that was down in most places, and feed into the short grass field we hunted.
As Kaz’ looked at bucks through his 3×9 AccuPoint, there was one he was ready to pull the trigger on…then a monster stepped out.  His massive, tall rack was covered in velvet and his spotted hide and dark face seemed to stand head and shoulders above the rest of the bucks.
After several minutes, the buck finally turned broadside, and inside 150 yards Kazden put the shot exactly where it needed to be.  The .240 Weatherby roared, and the Nosler Accubond did the job.  The buck ran a short distance and fell.KHaxisTX14.3
Walking up on that buck, Kazden was full of joy.  For years he’d been asking to hunt axis deer, and finally his time had come.  With 31” main beams and the longest fronts I’ve ever seen on a axis buck, he scored 154”, a truly magnificent animal.
It was a late night, as Kazden helped skin, butcher, package and get every bit of his deer meat into the freezer.  Due to hot temperatures, we had to get the deer processed and cooling, fast.  Axis deer is some of our favorite eating meat, and we’ve been enjoying every bite.  We hit the sack at 2:30 that morning.
The next highlight came the following night.  Grabbing our shotguns–mine, a 12 gauge Weatherby SA-08, Kazden his 20 gauge in the same model–and 00 buckshot, we headed to the edge of a field with Tony and Kyle.  Setting up behind a downed log, we waited.  Soon darkness consumed us, and that’s when the action started.
Hearing pigs roll off the hills, through the creek and into the field, was intense, especially when they were inside 20 yards.  Tony helped Ty Cary run cameras while Kyle manned the red light.  When all were ready, Kyle hit the switch.  Over a dozen hogs stood in front of us, but it was a sow and her youngsters.
Light turned off, I don’t know what struck me as most memorable, hearing all the hogs at such close range, or my son’s heavy breathing.  “That was awesome!” Kaz’ whispered when the hogs finally moved off.  I could only imagine what his face looked like in the pitch-dark.
Soon another group of hogs approached, these from behind.  This time there were multiple shooters.  It took several minutes to get a shot, but when a big pig cleared, Kaz’ put his Trijidot behind the shoulder of the biggest pig and fired.
Instantly, I tracked a hog through my RMR and connected.  Bam, two hogs down.  We got a couple more that night, and after butchering them, our heads hit the pillows at 5:30 a.m., as the sun began to rise.
The next day we moved to a hunting spot Kyle and Tony had arranged, farther west.  It was here we’d be hunting turkey, javelina and two species I’ve always dreamed of pursuing, blackbuck antelope and aoudad.  Look for Part II of our Texas adventure in another blog post, coming soon.
Watch for Kazden’s axis deer hunt, airing on the Sportsman Channel, in late 2014.  The DVD of his memorable hunt can also be purchased on our website, www.scotthaugen.com, starting in 2015.K&ShogsTX14.1
