The past month has been hectic, too hectic to stay caught up on my blog page..sorry!  So, here we go, an attempt to recapture each of my late season hunts, starting with WA mule deer.
The last week of November found us bowhunting for mule deer with Jerrod Gibbons, (www.okanoganvalleyguideservice.com).  Jerrod had invited us on this hunt several times, and we were finally able to make it work. The hunt took place in northern Washington, near Omak.
This was a first for me in two regards:  It was my first time hunting mule deer from a blind, and it was my first time hunting them over bait.  Both were very effective and fun, with the intent using apples and alfalfa to draw in does migratory bucks.
Jerrod had been getting many great bucks on trail camera, and on day one we sat all day, hoping for a 180” 4×4 that had been seen.  He never came in, but we did pass four smaller bucks, including about a 130” buck.
Day two found us headed to what was a slam-dunk deal.  A 30” 4×4 had been visiting a specific bait, several times a day.  We were in the blind before daylight, and sat all day.  Two other bucks came in multiple times–ones the 30”er traveled with–but he wasn’t with them.  We saw over 40 deer that day, but no 30”er.  We soon discovered he had been poached (see more on this buck in a soon-to-come blog post).
After much frustration we headed to another area to spot-and-stalk deer in the timber.  I hunted hard, trailing a 190+inch buck half the day, but could only get to 93 yards as does kept spooking.  We also saw another dandy buck in the 190” class, but there was no way of getting close to him in the short sage he hung out in.
After hunting the two following days and passing up several nice bucks, we returned to a blind and I arrowed a mid-140” 4×2.  My Trijicon AccuPin sight and Diamond Dead Eye bow were a great combination.  The shot came just outside 20 yards and the buck didn’t go 50 yards before piling up.  I never did find my Gold Tip Velocity arrow, which blew through him.
Ironically, a few days after I left, and after all Jerrod’s clients had tagged out, Jerrod got to hunt for himself.  The big buck I couldn’t get on in the timber, came in to the bait where Jerrod was sitting and he nailed it with his BowTech.  The buck had a kicker off one side, and green scored a whopping 196-inches!
A couple days later, Jerrod got the WA Governer’s tag holder the other big buck we were after.  That buck had a high, wide rack with great splits, but he hung in the sage and was tough to close the deal on via spot-and-stalk with the bow.  The Gov. tag holder took the buck with his rifle, and it scored 190-inches!
Not since Sonora have I seen so many big mule deer, and this is a testimony to how good WA mule deer hunting can be.  This late season hunt was cold, but fun, and the numbers of deer we saw were amazing.  I’ll be back next year, for sure!

The best part…all three of these bucks taken were caught on film for Trijicon’s The Hunt TV show, and will air in the summer and fall of 2012 on the Sportsman Channel.
